Scales of Justice - Class Project

This project's goal was to create an image representing, or communicating "Justice" in some perspective. I chose a sword mixed with weighing scales and integrated a compass on the hilt. The time of its creation was Spring 2015, when the riots in Ferguson, Missouri were still fresh in my mind from the previous months.
I wanted to communicate how justice can be a double-edged sword. The hilt holds a sort of moral compass, and holds the scales- which rest equally even though the weights may be different- to represent fairness or being impartial when the metaphorical sword of justice spares one and strikes another. The candles are lit for those lost to justice- fair or not, the public can see a sentence as justified whether it is or not. I wanted to show this all in a historical sort of context, not only that I like the imagery of the ages of stone buildings, candles, and swords, but to subtly express the long history and the historical emphasis Knights and Kingdoms put upon their laws and upholding justice in the past.
